City of Sunnyvale tree rules

A private tree is protected if its trunk is 38"+ in circumference (about 12.1" diameter) at 4.5 ft. A multi-trunk tree is protected if one trunk is 38"+ or all trunks together total 113"+. Removing a protected tree needs a permit, filed at least 10 working days ahead. The code has emergency waivers.

How to apply: File a protected tree removal permit with Sunnyvale Planning at least 10 working days before removal.

How to measure: most Bay Area cities measure trunk diameter (or circumference) at 4.5 ft (54") above natural grade, but some measure elsewhere: Berkeley at 4 ft, Redwood City at the widest point between 6" and 36". Where a city sets its limit by circumference, we show the diameter (circumference ÷ 3.14).
