The City says its Protected Trees Ordinance (OMC 12.36) requires a permit to remove trees on public or private property, including front and back yards. Non-development permits start at $601.05 plus a 14.75% tech fee. The ordinance's size and species exemptions are not published on the City pages, so ask Tree Services before you assume a tree is exempt.
How to apply: Apply for a Non-Development Tree Removal Permit in the Oakland Online Permit Center (Public Works › (ND) Non-Developmental Tree Permit). Minimum fee $601.05 plus 14.75% tech fee. Questions: 510-615-5934, treeremovalpermits@oaklandca.gov.
How to measure: most Bay Area cities measure trunk diameter (or circumference) at 4.5 ft (54") above natural grade, but some measure elsewhere: Berkeley at 4 ft, Redwood City at the widest point between 6" and 36". Where a city sets its limit by circumference, we show the diameter (circumference ÷ 3.14).
