City of Cupertino tree rules

Protected specimen trees are native oaks, California buckeye, bigleaf maple, deodar and blue atlas cedar, western sycamore and California bay laurel that are 12"+ in diameter (single trunk) or 24"+ combined (multi-trunk) at 4.5 ft. Heritage trees and trees required by past approvals are also protected. Removal needs a permit with public notice.

How to apply: Apply to Cupertino Planning for a tree removal permit; public noticing is required.

How to measure: most Bay Area cities measure trunk diameter (or circumference) at 4.5 ft (54") above natural grade, but some measure elsewhere: Berkeley at 4 ft, Redwood City at the widest point between 6" and 36". Where a city sets its limit by circumference, we show the diameter (circumference ÷ 3.14).
