City of Berkeley tree rules

Berkeley's Coast Live Oak ordinance (Ord. 6,905-N.S.) bans removing a coast live oak (single stem 18"+ circumference, about 5.7" diameter, or multi-stem 26"+ combined, measured 4 ft up) and pruning more than 25% in 24 months unless the City Manager approves an exception. Other private trees are not covered by this ordinance.

How to apply: Submit the Coast Live Oak Pruning or Removal Exemption form to Berkeley Urban Forestry (trees@cityofberkeley.info, 510-981-6660).

How to measure: most Bay Area cities measure trunk diameter (or circumference) at 4.5 ft (54") above natural grade, but some measure elsewhere: Berkeley at 4 ft, Redwood City at the widest point between 6" and 36". Where a city sets its limit by circumference, we show the diameter (circumference ÷ 3.14).
