Heritage trees (26"+ live, post, Shumard, bur, chinquapin or Monterey oak, bald cypress, American or cedar elm, pecan, walnut, Texas ash, southern magnolia) need review and approval to remove or prune. Single- and two-family lots platted before Feb 13, 2007 are exempt. The rules also apply in the Georgetown ETJ.
How to apply: Request heritage tree review from Georgetown Planning (trees@georgetowntexas.gov) through the MGO Connect portal.
Texas law: cities cannot charge a tree mitigation fee for a tree under 10" at an existing one- or two-family home you live in (Local Gov't Code §212.905, HB 7, 2017). Since 2023, landowners can petition to leave a city's ETJ (SB 2038), so ETJ lines change; we read the live City of Austin jurisdiction map.
