Removing a protected tree, or removing or pruning a heritage tree, needs written approval from the Director of Development Services, including at existing homes. Mitigation tiers start at 8" (protected) and heritage trees are 26"+. Storm-damaged trees that are an immediate hazard: only the hazardous part may be removed without an application. Dead or diseased trees still need approval but no mitigation. Pruning must be by or under an ISA certified arborist.
How to apply: Get written approval from Cedar Park Development Services before removing a protected or heritage tree (or pruning a heritage tree).
Texas law: cities cannot charge a tree mitigation fee for a tree under 10" at an existing one- or two-family home you live in (Local Gov't Code §212.905, HB 7, 2017). Since 2023, landowners can petition to leave a city's ETJ (SB 2038), so ETJ lines change; we read the live City of Austin jurisdiction map.
